The Colourful Baby Dee

Singer and songwriter Baby Dee has an interesting history. Born in 1953 in Cleveland, Ohio, Dee was classically schooled in piano and harp. The first decade of her carreer was spent as a music director and organist for a Catholic church in the Bronx. A man at the time, Dee left the church when she decided to live as a woman.

The Horrors

Since their 2007 debut ‘Strange House’ the English five-piece band The Horrors have come a long way, shedding their mod-goth looks and turning to a more melodious new wave/shoegaze sound. Their second album ‘Primary Colours’ was voted best of 2009 by the British magazine NME. Although they are influenced by 1960′s punk and new wave bands such as Bauhaus and nineties gems Sonic Youth, the Horrors managed to pay homage to their predecessors yet keeping a very distinct style of their own.

For their latest album ‘Skying’, which came out this summer, the group decided built their own studio. They wanted to be able to work in peace, controlling the whole process themselves. Finding a proper space proved to be more difficult than anticipated, but after a long search they found an old factory in east London. Although the group recorded and self-produced Skying, the album was mixed by Grammy Award-winning producer Craig Silvey.

The Horrors are currently on tour promoting their new album. They attracted a very diverse crowd in The Melkweg in Amsterdam last weekend, rangingfrom headbanging teenagers to slowdancing hippies and elders. The band played a strong set, ignoring their debut, which might have disappointed the early Horrors fans but left the shoegaze lovers more than pleased. Want to see the Horrors live?
