Warrior Part 1

Last Monday Brown Clothes by Melanie Brown proudly presented its fifth collection ‘WARRIOR part 1′ in gallery Wim van Krimpen. The collection has been inspired by the form and movements of Korean Martial Art, Kuk Sool Won. The name of the collection refers to contemporary women, who are all warriors on the inside.

In the presentation of the collection movement also played an important role, as it is referring to Eadweard Muybridge’ photography. The forms and silhouettes of the garments echo an eastern influence, with an emphasis on tailoring and layering. Fabrics are mostly natural (wool and silk), and the basic colour palette ranges from dark navies and blacks with red accents, and a tartan print with its reference to ancient clans and their warriors.

Later in the year ‘WARRIOR part 1’ will be developed and translated into summer wear for the follow up ‘WARRIOR part 2.’

The perfect pancakes

Millet & blueberry pancakes: very low in sugar, high in protein and vegan. Perfectly sweet without syrup!

Millet and Blueberry Pancakes - recipe by Scandi Foodie

(For 8 pancakes)

70 g millet meal

70 g wholegrain spelt flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

tiny pinch of salt

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

250 ml non-dairy milk (rice, almond, quinoa, soy, hemp)

1 tablespoon virgin coconut oil (room temperature)

1 tablespoon brown rice syrup

125 g fresh blueberries

virgin coconut oil, for frying

Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together the wet ingredients. Add the wet ingredients to the dry and lightly whisk to combine. Fold in the blueberries.
Heat a small frying pan on medium heat. Add a little bit of virgin coconut oil in the pan and cook the pancakes in small batches, a few minutes on each side. Serve warm. Enjoy!

Evoking monks embodied by women and yet keeping a very “out off the office, I’m gonna make a quick coffee run” look, Ylfang Wan must be the one M.A. fashion course graduate that struck me the most with nine looks composed out of a large fully woolen trenchcoats and long dresses repertoir. Probably based on and/or worn by a woman with a distorted perception of proportions; this woman loves walking around in Marmol-like body embracing belt pieces which not only embrace but as well deform the body in the most visually pleasant way. So is it splitted in half? Or just a fascinating mid-body piece that leaves a lot to the imagination? An idea so simple and yet makes you wonder and look forward to the twist made within every upcoming look.

MATTIJS VAN BERGEN TAKES ON LONDON

After having showed his collection in Amsterdam two weeks ago, Mattijs van Bergen took on London Fashion Week and wowed the audience with his F/W collection ‘Starburst’ for his label MATTIJS.

The collection was inspired by his favorite characters out of movies from his childhood, such as The Never Ending Story and Star Wars. Garments recalled the aesthetics of robots C3PO and R2D2, in silhouette and use of fabric, and powerful amazons such as Princess Leia, which made for a strong yet feminine look.

The collection featured colourful dresses in silks and chiffons as well as heavy coats and pleated pants in more rugged materials such as leather, boiled wool and wool crepe. MATTIJS’ signature pleats in mints, blues and blacks were paired with warm metallics such as gold and copper. The venue – the art deco style Freemasons Hall – provided a perfect backdrop for the feminine and at times futuristic collection.

The footwear for the show resulted from a collaboration between MATTIJS and iconic Dutch shoelabel United Nude.

INSTANT FICTION | Sarah van Lamsweerde

INSTANT FICTION is a live media installation by Sarah van Lamsweerde, on display until the 18th of Februari in De Brakke Grond in Amsterdam during the Something Raw Festival. The project was inspired by CCTV, which is found everywhere nowadays: stores, parking lots, nightclubs and so on. This can have a rather alienating effect: waiting in line at the gas station staring at a monitor and going ‘hey I’m on tv?!’.

During Something Raw the cashier, café and foyer are filmed continously by camera’s that are controlled from a distance. The result can be followed in real-time on tv screens that are scattered throughout the building. The only difference with a regular security installation: the images are substitled. On first glance the text seems to have little relation to the imagery, but the longer we watch, the more image and text are interwoven.

This results in a playful and alienating situation, in which visitors are suddenly turned into actors of the everyday. For Something Raw the subtitles are selected from movies such as Together (Lukas Moodysson), The Damned (Luchino Visconti), It’s a Free World (Ken Loach), El Ángel Exterminador (Luis Buñuel) and the American series True Blood.

Instant Fiction is on display until the 18th of February in De Brakke Grond, Amsterdam (free entrance)

It might not exactly be the most cheerful song we’ve heard about The Netherlands, but Cold Specks debut single ‘Holland’ has been mesmerizing us ever since we’ve heard it for the first time. Watch the eye popping, Olivier Groulx directed music video above. Cold Specks is releasing her debut album ‘I Predict A Graceful Expulsion’ on March 22.
